The Cloister at Sea Island
was the vision of Howard Coffin, the founder of the Hudson Car
Company. He asked his cousin Bill Jones to help him with the
development. The Cloister at Sea Island is now a world-renowned
resort.
Sea Island is a family resort. While parents
are sunbathing or playing golf, there are many activities
planned for children such as tennis and golf clinics. There are
special programs for children, ages 3 to 11.
Sea Island is known for its championship golf
courses. The 18-hole Plantation Course was designed by Rees
Jones and opened in 1998.
Fitness activities are offered at the Sea
Island Resort. You can participate in classes created for you
as well as other personal fitness and wellness programs.
Actitivies at the resort include tennis, swimming, horseback
riding, sunset cruises, boating, fishing, kayaking, and so
on.
There are over 250 guest rooms at The Cloister.
Guest rooms and suites are located in various houses on Sea
Island. Older guest houses, The Retreat House, Hamilton House,
and Harrington House are located on the beach. The newer guest
houses and Terrace Houses are located between the tennis
courts and the beach.
The Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club opened in
March of 2001. It offers forty luxurious guest rooms and
suites. They are situated above the clubhouse with golf course
views. Some have ocean views.
The cuisine at Sea Island is among the best in
the world. The main dining room at The Cloister has live music
and dancing during the warmer months. The Terrace dining room
of The Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club serves a continental
cuisine.
The best time to visit The Cloister at Sea
Island is during late spring, summer, and early fall. It is
easy to get to Sea Island. If you drive, it is an hour from
Savannah, Georgia and Jacksonville, Florida. Private aircraft
can land at the McKinnon Airport on St. Simons Island, which is
four miles away.
